2023 Highlights
Living in a constant high of loving what I do is nice but I also try to be cautious. I’ve said from the start that I’m working for Jesus. He can take it away any time he wants. That’s hard when I love Painting Parties so much. But I also realize that life is never completely in my control even though I am a complete planner! Every detail of every party is thought through thoroughly (have you noticed?) Even the jewelry I wear often accents the painting we are creating. My creative mind seldom sleeps!
I started January 2023 by having my 2nd painting party in a foreign county: Chile! Never would I have dreamed I’d go to Chile. But, I’m so glad I did. It’s summer time in January and so pretty there. Since we attended a friend’s wedding, a painting party seemed fitting for the group. January also started with a huge fundraiser party in Belleville. 84 people attended and that became my largest ever fundraiser attendance.

Fundraisers have been so amazing. I love helping the organizers support their causes. So far, I haven’t had any parties that I would struggle with morally. In February we had another great Art Camp at our church. It was a fun theme of “snow globes.” The biggest shock in February came from my husband. Each year I’ve asked him to come to my couple’s party. This year was the same. He asked where it was located, but never said much about it. As I was setting up, he called for more directions because he was on his way. Not only did he come, he painted in front of everyone with me. My friend Wendy got some great pictures.
While my daughter Julia was home on break in March, she helped at a large party in Thompsontown. It was great re-living our “after party” chats on the way home. April had an astonishing 11 parties! I have no idea how I did it. I shouldn’t have doubted the success of a party in a carpet shop. The host might have been the sweetest host all year and she raised over $1000 for her daughter in law’s cancer medical bills. We painted wood animal cut-outs for the first time to benefit 4-H. I thought it would have been better attended, but 31 was still okay. Paint Your Pet was a blast. The paintings turned out amazing! One lady forgot to pay me $20 and drove 40 minutes out of her way to my house. I would have told her to keep the money if I had known. I really enjoyed painting barn quilts at the JES Spring Vendor Show. They’re so neat to see people create. We did these again at a fundraiser in the fall and I again loved how they turned out.
Although we mainly do painting parties in Juniata and Mifflin counties, we occasionally get into Synder and Perry County. But, in May I finally had my first party in Franklin County. They raised over $1000 for foster care. I didn’t get any bookings from the party, but maybe I will in the future. Franklin county is not that far from my home. Another party raised over $1000 in June. It was for the Girl Scouts. My one daughter was able to help me. I didn’t tell her who it benefited until we arrived because she was traumatized by a bad troop experience at a painting party when she was younger. Thankfully this was a much better experience!

May was also special because I was given the “Ambassador Award” by the Juniata Valley Chamber of Commerce during a lovely ceremony at Ray Vernon Estate. I love promoting local causes, venues, and businesses. I really think we live in the best area of Pennsylvania.
I started taking more reels at my parties. Rather, I’ll take a combination of photos and short videos to create reels for my Facebook page. They are time consuming but I enjoy all things with photo editing and design. I still create flyers for my hosts to help them advertise their parties. I also try to post on my Facebook story often. Keeping up with Facebook trends can seem like a full-time job, but it still seems like the best form of advertising.
We had an AMAZING Mother’s Day Party at Annsfield again. This time they could choose between a ceramic teacup with real flowers or a wood cutout of stacked teacups. It was so pretty. I did all the food again. Why?! Because I’m cheap and like it a certain way. But I also regret all the work it takes. During these big events I continue to dream of having my own studio space!
An unusual place for a party was a race car shop! I love elegant parties, and this wasn’t one of them! It was still an okay event for a sweet couple. In June I had 2 parties scheduled in one day for one host. They were for the Senior Games of Mifflin/Juniata counties. One problem – my daughter needed me elsewhere that day. I offered the job to my other daughter but she didn’t think she could lead them. I regret not having them lead parties when they were younger and while I was with them. They could do it, they just need more confidence. Thankfully my assistant Destiny was willing to fill in. And although she was 5 months pregnant, she led both parties with mom my as her helper.
I ended up in the hospital twice this year. Both times I took my paints! That’s because I was invited to paint at the Janet Wise Children’s Hospital in Danville. In June we painted with patients and their families. This was the first activity the March of Dimes hosted since Covid! Wow!! Attendance was low. But I donated all my time and supplies as a simple way to bless these families. Later in October I returned to the hospital to paint in the NICU. That’s right – there were tiny babies right outside the room where we painted with 28 nurses and staff! We did quick and easy pour paintings with them as a “thank you” for all they do. They thoroughly enjoyed it. A few would come in the tiny room and create their projects. We’d quickly clean up their area and prep before another group would trickle in. It was a fun party.

I was blown away by the turn out at the July 4th festival in East Waterford. I love supporting my hometown and offered a low-cost walk-in party during the festival. 45 people painted on live edge wood boards! I had made a new connection for wood. John Youtsey from Walnut Hollow Woodcraft provided the wood for these projects and later for my porch leaners. He is from Granville and actually delivers the wood when they come to Zooks! I’m so grateful for his incredible skills and an affordable price.
I did a Fairy Garden painting party at the McAlisterville park. It wasn’t a huge party, but it was fun. They painted mushrooms and then put them in a container with soil and plants. I learned the hard way that the word “mushroom” is flagged on Facebook and they won’t show your event or posts.
During the summer we did several outdoor parties. They always make me nervous. Even a slight breeze can dry paints and send pallets flying. But a picnic party for Sunbury Weis employees was great fun. They painted ¼ of a sunflower and worked as teams of 4 to create one whole flower. My friend Nichole helped at this party. Valerie was working more and unable to help at a lot of the parties.

I was invited back to the Juniata County fair again. Last year I had suggested that we paint in the livestock barn since the animals had left the day before. So, that is where we painted. It was much better than squeezing into a tent. Since they were offering “goat snuggling” I decided we should paint goats. The 40 free seats, paid for by Leonard Insurance, quickly filled up. Nichole, Amy, and Valerie were my helpers. It was mass mayhem for about 45 minutes! Haha. I kept my cool and the kids seemed to have fun!
I accidently booked two parties on one Saturday in September. But it couldn’t have gone smoother. The morning party was at a local church with sweet ladies that I knew from the community. I had just enough time to go home and switch supplies for my afternoon party. I did the morning party by myself and mom helped with the afternoon party. She’s always willing to help whenever I need her.
In September I hit the skies!! During a fall fest at Lovetwo Eat Farm, I had a painting party and during the party I took a helicopter ride! I never had one before and I knew we could fly over my farm! I was SO excited. My mom watched over the party while my son and I took a speedy helicopter ride. It was worth it!
A funeral nearly changed a massive “Pumpkin Succulent” party I was planning. 49 people registered. Thankfully the timing worked out well. I could attend the funeral and still have the party at At The Barnyard Cornmaze in Lewistown. I did a lot of prep for the party by gathering succulents, fresh flowers and dried flowers for the pumpkins. Nichole and I had shopped at local greenhouses for the succulents. On a very back road in Perry County we found a greenhouse that had discounted all their succulents for the season. I loaded up my van!! Thankfully At The Barnyard provided all the pumpkins and I didn’t have to gather them up and wash them this year. I did grow some pumpkins and I spray painted those copper. This was a Goose Day event so I offered a few swan-shaped pumpkins as options. It was a WONDERFUL party!
I foolishly did an outdoor vendor show at the Juniata County Fair. Thankfully I had 20 people pre-register or else I wouldn’t have sat in the cold rainy weather. I don’t think I’ll do that party again. I also won’t be at vendor at the JV Winery again. I love it there but people were not buying. Another unpleasant party was at a local campground. I was assured a heated pavilion. It was not heated when I arrived and I couldn’t find the lights. Thankfully someone soon helped me, but no sign of the host. I set up without knowing exactly how many people had signed up. And…we were painting ceramics. Thankfully it was ceramics I had in stock. Only 7 people painted. I tried hard to have a good attitude.
But a venue I was VERY excited about going to was The Old Mill Coffeehouse in Richfield. They had recently opened. When I approached the owner about coming, he was excited and showed me their new upstairs venue area. I didn’t even realize they had that area. It was perfect! I booked a party painting wooden pumpkins. I had gotten these last year from Promise Ranch. She had ordered them but wasn’t able to use them all, so I bought them from her. The party quickly sold out with 34 people. I wish I had more. The owners are so nice! Brian actually carried several of my heavy tubs up the two flights of stairs! He even served people their food and drinks during the party. I quickly booked a Christmas party at the coffeehouse.
For several years I had wooden frames made by Pete Markley of Lewistown. He did a wonderful job. But his health is declining. I had dropped off several frames for him to re-do without knowing his health was not well. Frames can be a pain to sell, but I like offering them and giving one to my hosts. So, I’m not sure if and when I’ll be offering frames again.

By the beginning on November, we were in full Christmas mode! I liked painting ceramic truck ornaments for a Mifflin Co Fair fundraiser. Everyone was so creative. It actually took them longer than I thought to paint two small ornaments. I was honored to be invited back to the PA State Farm Bureau convention at the Hershey Lodge. I bought a new long collapsible wagon for this event. I was able to load 4 large tubs and more supplies onto the wagon and easily pull it through the hallways in one trip! I painted at the JES Christmas Vendor show. I was really disappointed that only 22 people painted. But, did sell a lot of to-go ceramics.
THE BIG ONE happened on November 29! My largest ever painting party! When Kaci Bryner had contacted me in the fall about hosting a fundraiser I quickly said YES! She has had well attended events for me in the past. She chose 5 Christmas ceramics for her guests to choose from. She had 125 people attend!! It took a lot of organization and a lot of help – but boy did it ever run smoothly. I loved it!! We set up the night before with help from my husband, son, daughter, friend, and Kaci. Each seat had a name tag and check mark for the ceramic they chose. I also had a small paper with typed instructions at each seat. Before the party, I prepped the pallets with the name of the ceramics. When they arrived, they were given a pallet with the paint they would need for their ceramic. It was wonderful!!
December continued with a flurry of parties. I never stopped. From one party to the next! I still really enjoyed the Christmas season this year. Maybe I was more organized or maybe I just knew this is how busy I usually am. I loved the entire season and was so blessed with good health and good helpers.
Last year I took a break from participating in the Festival of Ice in downtown Lewistown because I couldn’t find a good location. This year I thought I found the golden ticket. I made a connection with a special needs lady that attends some of my parties. The place she goes to for support is located on the square in Lewistown (right by all the festival happenings). I met with the staff and they were excited to have me. I could have their ENTIRE area! It has a huge glass windows facing the square. The only problem was that their computer area is right by the windows. The painting area would be farther back in their nice café. I didn’t think it would be a problem. I had a handful of people pre-register, but not too many. I figured I’d have lots of walk ins like past years. The theme was “Island Christmas.” We painted ceramic lighthouses and snowman or Santa canvases. Thankfully about 15 people from the organization painted with me at the start of the evening. But, only about 4 people walked in. I had LOTS of helpers since I expected crowds. People were at the festival, but even though I had signs outside, people just didn’t venture inside. It was so much work to set up. Sadly, I doubt I’ll do that festival again.
But on a good note, my three Christmas ceramic parties were wildly popular again! I was a bit crazy and offered 9 ceramic choices! 18” tree, 13” tree, 11” tree, snowman, truck, wreath, cactus, 9 pc nativity, and 3 pc nativity. I hadn’t really thought through the amount of inventory I would need! Each item needed at least 3 extra ceramics incase of breakage. I had many unpacking parties in our garage and my family was very supportive. The entire two car garage was used for ceramics from early November till mid-December. Over 300 ceramics were painted. The numbers were down from last year, but still really good. During the ceramic party in Reedsville, we had 84 people attend. I unwisely did not bring enough green paint. What was I thinking?! Thankfully Valerie was able to drive to Hobby Lobby and secure us more green paint! Destiny was able to help with her son that was less than 2 months old! I had two ceramic parties at The Old Mill Coffeehouse. They were back-to-back and it was wonderful to set up once for two parties. Carrying the ceramics up two flights of stairs was no fun! But my friends had helped me unload one van full several days before the party. My mom helped at all my ceramic parties. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. Since the last party there was the last party of the year, I discounted any remaining ceramics and nearly sold out of my inventory! Yay! After selling a few more through Facebook, I was only left with two ceramics cactus (I had accidently ordered 8 too many). Also, in December I did one canvas party, one wood snowman party, and one work party.

I always enjoy tallying the numbers at the end of the year.
Most People in One Month: April 327, December 319
Worst Months: August 46, January 97
Number of Parties that raised over $1000: 8
Number of Parties in 2023: 77
Number of Projects Painted in 2023: 2,409
Number of Parties 2015-2023: 702
Number of Projects Painted 2015-2023: 18,412
And I always end the year feeling overwhelming blessed. There’s no greater joy than doing what you love and encouraging people while you do it. It would be hard for me to lock myself in my art loft and create art for myself or clients. I enjoy creating knowing that it will bless lots of people. My family has been great! They know I dream of owning a studio where I don’t have to carry all my supplies around. Mobile parties have been wonderful and people like going to the different venues. But I still envision a place people can gather and create in an environment that is supportive and memorable. A place I can decorate and make special for each person that walks in the door. A place big enough for fundraisers but small enough to feel cozy and welcoming. God only knows if that will occur and I think I’ve been patient in the waiting. If the answer is no, then I’ll continue on this wonderful journey as long as I can.
I can’t thank people enough for painting with me. I seems kind of sappy, but I am so grateful that people have been so supportive and kind! I’m looking forward to year number NINE!
If you read all this - THANK YOU. Send me a note to tell me you read it and leave any helpful words of encouragement or advice.
